The ground floor features a striking barrel‑vaulted dining room, an atmospheric space perfect for memorable family meals. The fully equipped country‑style kitchen is designed for easy home cooking, and the adjoining snug — complete with its original fireplace — offers a cosy, intimate corner for reading, morning coffee, or quiet conversation. Deep‑set windows, exposed stonework, and traditional architectural details give this level an unmistakable sense of heritage.
On the first floor, the castle opens into its magnificent Great Hall, a grand living space with a soaring 17‑foot ceiling and the original fireplace as its centrepiece. This impressive room also includes a sofa bed, allowing accommodation for an additional two guests when required. This floor also includes two of the three bedrooms: the master bedroom, which features a king‑sized bed and its own en‑suite shower room, and a second bedroom with two single beds, served by another newly renovated shower room.

Little Tarrel Castle sits approximately 2.5 miles outside the charming village of Portmahomack. Access is via a shared private road leading from the B9165 up to the castle, where a secure, gated parking area is available exclusively for guest use throughout your stay.
Guests have full access to the entire castle, and there are no shared spaces — the property is completely private for your party. The grounds include a grassed garden, ideal for children to play and perfect for pets to enjoy. The garden area is not fully enclosed.
Please note that, due to the rural setting, there is no street lighting in the surrounding area. However, the castle is equipped with an outdoor light that can be left on for your convenience for the duration of your stay.

When travelling to Little Tarrel Castle, we highly recommend researching your public transport routes or ensuring that guests have access to a car.
Unfortunately, Portmahomack does not have access to apps such as Lyft or Uber, and our only modes of public transport are the bus (Stagecoach) and the occasional private hire Taxi company.
Portmahomack does not have a train station (Scotrail), and the nearest stations are Fearn and Tain.
